You live wherever you live, you do whatever work you do, you talk however you talk, you eat whatever you eat, you wear whatever clothes you wear, you look at whatever images you see… you’re living however you can, you are whoever you are. “Identity”… of a person, of a thing, of a place.

“Identity.” The word itself gives me shivers. It rings of calm, comfort, contentedness. What is it, identity? To know where you belong? To know your self worth? To know who you are? How do you recognize identity? We are creating an image of ourselves, we are attempting to resemble this image … Is that what we call identity? The accord between the image we have created of ourselves and …ourselves? Just who is that, “ourselves”?

We live in the cities, the cities live in us ….. Everything changes. And fast. Images above all, change faster and faster and they have been multiplying at a hellish rate ever since the explosion that released the electronic images, the very images that are now replacing photography. We have learned to trust the photographic image, can we trust the electronic image? With painting everything was simple. The original was unique and each copy was a copy, a forgery. With photography and then film it began to get complicated. The original was a negative, without a print it did not exist, just the opposite: each copy was the original. But now, with the electronic image and soon the digital, there is no more negative and no more positive, the very notion of the original is obsolete, everything is copy. All distinctions have become arbitrary, no wonder the idea of identity finds itself in such a feeble state. Identity is out, out of fashion. Exactly. Then, what is in vogue if not fashion itself? By definition, fashion is always in. Identity and fashion; are the two contradictory?

"In an unusual collaboration with W magazine, Mr. Ai created a story line for a series of photos that were shot on location in New York by the photographer Max Vadukul as Mr. Ai looked on, art directing via Skype on a laptop computer. The photos will appear in the November issue, W’s sixth annual one devoted to art. They depict a woman, dressed in the requisite designer outfit, being captured, handcuffed and hooded on the street by two menacing figures and taken to a grim institution — a disused part of Rikers — where they watch her shower."

Suno's first runway show took place last night at Milk studios to immediate twitter accolades by the likes of Susie Lau and Cathy Horyn. And the praise was duly warranted. Prints covered silhouettes that spoke to earlier styles while illustrating a move towards new shapes and more refined aesthetics. The slit-leather chokers and Loeffler Randall-collab sandles were pretty stellar as well.

Kudos to its brilliant directors.

Few professions illustrate the supreme practice of craft today more than the art of millinery. An immediate contemporary example is Philip Treacy, the British milliner who along with Lee McQueen greatly benefitted by the attentions of Isabella Blow in the early 90s, and who's creations are lauded and worn both on the runway and the red carpet (and to royal weddings). Another equally estimed example is Albertus Swanepoel, a South African award-winning fashion designer who began his millinery training under Balenciaga's Janine Galimard, and is today the most sought-after milliner during New York Fashion Week (as well as a recent CFDA/Vogue runner-up). The list of designers he's collaborated with is dizzying, and includes Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, DVF, Derek Lam, Proenza Schouler, Carolina Herrera .... it goes on and on.

As an accessory, the hat has sadly decreased in popular use, replaced by that morbid signifier of casual wear, the baseball cap. While more extravagant creations of headgear (think Treacy) do indeed appear only at highly selective occasions, hats with less flash are experiencing something of a rebirth, or at least a reevaluation, by contemporary culture (at least in the big cities). In our sartorial zeitgeist that venerates individualized style with countless street style blogs (to name one example), it seems silly and odd that hats are not more included in the making of one's appearance.

Exceptions are popping up everywhere however (see NYT article on the rising popularity of the borsalino), and Swanepoel's work understands the role of a hat as an accompaniment to an outfit, instead of the centerpiece - an insight afforded to him probably by his experience as a designer of clothing as well as hats. Three weeks ago I styled a small shoot with the performance artist Marina Abromovic for Lurve Magazine which will run in the Spring.Summer issue (you can buy it at Opening Ceremony, I've finally discovered). It was lovely working with her and how trite of me to say, but I was taken aback by how kind she was, not to say I'd expected otherwise, but .. anyway. She knew exactly how to pose, and was entirely comfortable in front of the camera, better than many of the models I've worked with. At the same time there wasn't really much vanity involved with her ease as the center of attention, and this comes as no surprise considering she's spent the past 40 or 50 years as a performance artist, and having people look at you (check out her last exhibition at MoMA) and treat you/your body as a spectacle (or what have you - I'm not terribly good at artspeak) would give you a pretty damn good schooling in how to appear. It was as if posing before Joachim's camera was another form of performance for her, and I thought of this only in retrospect but in a way it was a performance, by the most skilled model of all. I started thinking about modeling itself, and the difference between someone who knows exactly how to make herself or himself appear - or perhaps how to control/manipulate their image - and someone who has no idea how to behave, or how to portray herself in front of a camera (I am one of these hapless individuals). Of course the photographer's direction (if indeed the photographer is good enough to provide any) becomes part of the subject's image, but ultimately if the person being photographed knows how to appear, knows how to show herself, then it is she as much as the photographer who is holding the camera.

apparently alexander wang doesn't want the above image, or the series to which it belongs, to be referred to as advertisements or part of an ad campaign because it denotes a complicity with "doing things in a systematic way - like rolling out ads in the magazines certain times of the year,”. he prefers to call them "image pieces," which this author finds hilarious, but at the same time it is a kind of commendable thing to do. Pulling away from standard advertising traditions is a clear sign that you want to remain individual, and mr. wang sure as hell has the funds to do this. the images will only appear in Interview Magazine during the month of march, to boot. there are of course other means of marketing one's label, and even if the rarely-appearing "image piece" idea is serving superficial pursuits of creating an exclusive, WE'RE DIFFERENT, vibe, its still breaking out of a mold, and im all for that. i feel like there aren't enough labels that are actually trying to shake things up at all. they want to look like they are by having strange, quasi-disturbing images (like tom ford's eyewear ads, though i do love that campaign), but the ads still function well within the confines of the fashion system. they dont actually make you stop and think. comme des garcons' original advertisements made you stop and think, or just get confused:

Dunno what this image has to do with shirts but its probably among the most interesting advertising i've ever encountered. (what is an advertisement what is commodity is this ironic will i go buy a shirt how is this fashion what is going on.) it gets you going. the gucci and tom ford ads are also seriously pushing the envelope. terry richardson started this off as well with the original american apparel photos, but thats a different kind of ad, and different kind of fashion. like the above pics, the below images dont really focus your attention on clothing or product at all.

It goes beyond shock value as well. THESE will be remembered as image pieces, not just as advertisements. Alexander Wang take note. et bon chance.

WWD reported that Balenciaga's new campaign will feature Gisele and little boy blue baaadass Yuri Pleskun. She kind of looks like Emmanuelle Beart in this photo ... (aka lovely).

Brazilian model Gisele Bundchen first hit runways and magazine covers in the mid 1990s (in case you, like my younger brother Kristian who blogged the below post without my knowing, didn't know) and is listed by Forbes magazine as the highest-paid model in the world.

While supermodels are great and all, the problem with their ascent to modeling stardom is that - in this day and age - they become celebrities, and in an industry with a higher turnover rate of "new faces" than Hollywood there is very little room for someone whose face has been on the scene for over a decade. Kate Moss has obviously found a way around this and continues to grace us with her petite presence in all manner of forms (designing for Top Shop, appearing in ad campaigns, dating Pete Doherty whenever that was, etc.), but I think its a pity that more-recently-seen faces (think Daria Werbowy or Agyness Deyn among others) dont get much face time. Their popularity is so great when they first debut that only a few years (or seasons) later they're doing far less work. The cult of the celebrity now includes models very prominently which is understandable but wouldn't it be interesting if for once you didn't know the name of (or at least recognize) the girl on the cover of whatever magazine you were reading? I await the day that anonymity becomes trend.
